Deck Board Calculator: How Many Deck Boards Do I Need?
Calculating deck boards is more involved than dividing deck square footage by the square footage of one board. Board direction, board width, gaps, picture framing, angled cuts, and waste can all change the final quantity.
Why square footage alone is not enough
Two decks can have exactly the same square footage and still require different quantities of decking. A simple rectangle with straight boards is efficient. A deck with clipped corners, picture framing, diagonal boards, multiple levels, or several connected sections creates more cuts and more waste.
Step 1: Determine which way the deck boards will run
Deck boards normally run perpendicular to the joists below them. That means board direction and joist direction should be planned together.
For a 16′ × 20′ deck, if the boards run the 20-foot direction, you need enough rows of decking to cover the 16-foot dimension.
Step 2: Find the effective board coverage
Deck boards do not normally install edge-to-edge. The required gap between boards contributes to the overall coverage.
If a nominal board is roughly 5.5 inches wide and the installation uses a gap between boards, the effective coverage of each row is the board width plus that gap.
Step 3: Calculate the number of board rows
Convert the deck dimension perpendicular to the boards into inches, then divide by the effective coverage per board row.
Always round up. You cannot buy a fraction of a board row.
Step 4: Calculate total linear footage
Multiply the number of rows by the length of each row. That gives you the approximate linear footage of field decking before waste, picture-frame borders, breaker boards, stairs, and other details are added.
Step 5: Add picture framing and breaker boards
Picture framing adds perimeter boards around the field decking. Breaker boards divide long runs or create intentional pattern changes.
Both features look simple in a finished deck, but they can require:
- Additional deck boards
- Extra blocking
- Additional fasteners
- More cuts
- More waste
Step 6: Add waste
Waste depends on the layout.

It is better to calculate waste from the actual geometry than to rely on one percentage for every project.
What about board lengths?
Once you know the required linear footage, choose board lengths that minimize seams and offcuts.
For example, a 20-foot deck may work efficiently with 20-foot boards if that exact length is available and practical to install. A different project may make better use of 12-, 16-, or 20-foot boards in a staggered pattern.
Should you include stair treads?
Yes. Stair treads use additional decking and should be calculated separately from the main deck surface.
The amount depends on:
- Stair width
- Number of treads
- Board orientation
- Required tread depth
- Nosing details
What about fascia?
Fascia is not the same as field decking. It is usually calculated from exposed deck perimeter, stair faces, and other visible framing edges.
How many hidden fasteners do I need?
Hidden-fastener quantity depends on the number of board-to-joist intersections. A deck with closer joist spacing uses more fasteners than the same deck with wider joist spacing.
Starter and edge clips may also be needed around the perimeter or at special board transitions, depending on the fastening system.

Suppose the boards run the 20-foot direction. You would calculate how many board rows are required to cover 16 feet, multiply those rows by 20 feet, then add any picture-frame boards, stairs, and waste.
