What is composite decking?
Composite decking is an engineered deck board commonly made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic, often with a protective cap around the board. Product construction varies by manufacturer and collection, so homeowners should compare warranties, capping, traction, heat, color, and installation requirements rather than assuming all composite boards are the same.
Composite was developed as a lower-maintenance alternative to traditional wood. It still needs cleaning, but it generally does not need sanding, staining, or sealing as part of normal maintenance.

Wood is real wood. No manufactured board perfectly duplicates the exact variation, grain, and aging of natural lumber. For some homeowners, that settles the argument immediately.

Neither material is scratch-proof. Composite scratches can be more difficult to disguise because the board is a finished manufactured surface. Wood can scratch and dent too, but it offers the advantage of being sandable and refinishable in many situations.
For composite, ask the manufacturer how damaged boards are repaired and whether individual boards can be replaced without disturbing a large section of the deck.
